村上春樹의 The Hardboiled Wonderland and The End of the World는 George Orwell의 1984를 거의 그대로 표절한 것이나 다름없다.

마치, 잠자는 무라까미의 꿈 속에 죠지 오웰이 나타나 읊어주기라도 한 것인지?

 

The fallacy was obvious. It presupposed that somewhere or other, outside oneself, there was a “real” world where “real” things happened. (p.229)

왜 이런 일이 가능한 지?

 

核彈이 여기 저기 떨어지고 세계는 3개권역 (3 Superstates)으로 구분되어있다. Airstrip one으로 재명명된 도시 런던에 아직 산발적인 폭탄 공격이 이어지고 있는 지금 1984년.  Winston Smith는 Julia라는 한 여인을 만나고…Thought Police에 구금되며, 고문에 이어, 洗腦의 대상이 된다.

Orwell is not alone in this endeavor, Two other writers, the Russian Zamyatin in his book WE, and Aldous Huxley in his Brave New World, have expressed the mood of the present, and a warning for the future, in ways very similar to Orwell’s…. what may be called “negative utopias” of the middle of the twentieth century.. The negative utopias express the mood of powerlessness and hopelessness of modern man just as the early utopias expressed the mood of self-confidence and hope of post-medieval man.

One can say that Zambatin’s and Orwell’s examples resemble more the Stalinist and Nazi dictatorships while Huxley’s Brave New World is a picture of the development of Western industrial world, provided it continues to follow the present trend without fundamental change.

며칠 걸려 ‘1984년1월31일’ 이라고 적힌, 아마도 그 날 교내 서점에서 사두었던 것을 마침내 읽다.

35년만에. 무척 재미있다. 문체는 간결하며, 능숙하며,,감미롭다. 아마 젊은 시절 버마의 더위 속에서 꿈꾸며 갈아온 글 솜씨 덕인 듯. I love you, Orwell.
