가장 마음에 들었다. 대개 비슷한 性情에 동의하는 건 놀라운 일은 아니다.

Quinn은 William Wilson이란 필명의 추리소설 작가.

 

Max Work는 Daniel Quinn 작품 속 주인공 탐정.

 

소설 속의 Paul Auster는 필자의 본명을 딴, Quinn의 僞名이 된다.

 

 

 

단, Quinn 자신이 위명한 진짜 Paul Auster를 방문하는 바, 그 둘의 대화는 당연히 知的 이며 興味津津 ( 동일 인물_Quinn이 동일인물_Paul Auster와 대화하는 것이므로)

 

대화는 소설 Don Quixote를 둘러싼 흥미로운 이야기를 이어간다.  Sancho Panza.

 

 

 

幼兒監禁시 아이는 결국 어떤 언어를 취할 것인가?

 

아마도 하느님의 자손으로 Hebrew를 말하고 있을 것인지?

Quinn은 Boston Stillman 2와 쌍둥이로 보다 건강하고 기품 있어 뵈는 이를 발견

 

Quinn이 Peter Stillman 1을 미행하지 않음으로 인해, 이 사람의 등장은 여기서 끝이며

 

종적은 알 수 없는 채, City of Glass는 마감.

 

아버지 Peter Stillman이 숨겨진 쌍둥이라는 것인데, 자초지종은 마지막까지 알 수 없다.

 

작가가 마지막 즈음 단 한마디로 정리한 바, 만약 이 사람을 따라갔더라면?

        오랜 감옥 생활에서 풀려 돌아온 노쇠한 버전의 Stillman.

 

        Quinn은 결국 이 노인을 뒤따르기로 결정하는 데..

 

        차후 Quinn이 모르는 사이, 이 사람은 다리에서 투신 자살.

 

 

 

1. 아들 Peter Stillman (아버지 Peter Stillman이 幼兒監禁 하였으나, 화재로 인해 구출된 사내. 그는 결국 반 정신 肢體障碍로 살아가지만, 감옥에서 풀려난 父의 복수를 두려워한다. )

 

 

 

1. Virginia Stillman (아들 Peter Stillman의 당초 간호원. 부질없는 삶으로부터 Peter를 돌보는 일에로 삶의 의미를)

 

 

 

다 읽었지만 OMG!이다. 이런 걸 소설이라고 쓰느라 엄청 고생했다는 느낌.

 

구성이 복잡, 완성도가 미진한 것은 어쩔 수 없다만, 문체만큼은 OK>

 

젠체하는 구석이 없다.

 

 

 

뉴욕의 시가지 구석 구석을 작가와 정처 없이 걸어 다녀 본 기분이 드는 것도 OK.

 

Riverside Drive는 한 번쯤 가볼 만 할 듯.

 

특히, Mount Tom_ just a Rock at Riverside Drive.

 

(Mount Tom was so named by Edgar Allan Poe in about 1844)

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

2부Ghosts

Brown ( before the beginning-)

 

 

 

Brown taught him the ropes, and when Brown grew old, Blue took over.

 

White wants Blue to follow Black, a Walden (by Henry David Thoreau) reader.

 

Brown retired in Florida, fishing. Blue seeks his advice,

 

 

 

Blue stumbles into Grey as Grey’s wife reported him missing.

 

Grey had changed name to Green later.

 

Gold spent his whole life to track the murder case of a boy to no success.

 

Red, a bartender resembles to Green

 

Violet, a tart at the bar.

Blue goes to his office every day and sits at his desk, waiting for something to happen. For a long time nothing does, and then a man named White walks through the door, and that is how it begins.

 

 

 

 

 

3부 The Locked Room

 

 

 

Fanshawe는 話者의 불알 친구. 7歲의 血盟.

 

話者는 물론 작가 나부랭이.

 

자라면서 서로 다른 삶을 사느라 거의 연락이 끊어진 즈음.

 

 

 

어느 날 그의 부인 Sophie로부터 書翰은 Fanshawe의 실종을 알려온다. 곧 태어날 아이 Ben과 부인을 뒤로한 채, 기나긴 습작기 미발표 소설, 극본을 화자에게 보내라는 전언만 남긴 채 갑자기 자취를 감춘 것.

I pretended to admire the baby, who was waving his arms and drooling whitish spittle down his chin, but I was more interested in his mother. Fanshawe had been lucky. The woman was beautiful, with dark, intelligent eyes, almost fierce in their steadiness. Thin, not more than average height, and with something slow in her manner, a thing that made her both sensual and watchful, as though she looked out on the world from the heart of a deep inner vigilance. Np an would have left this woman of his own free will.-especially not when she was about to have his child. That much was certain to me. Even before I stepped into the apartment, I knew the Fanshawe had to be dead.

 

 

 

하지만 Fanshawe는 죽은 척, 자취를 감춘 것일 뿐.
