New Year letter from Ken Follet

Happy New Year! I will have a new book out this year. Right now I’m putting the finishing touches to Fall of Giants, a story about a group of families caught up in the First World War and the Russian Revolution. There is an American family, a German family, a Russian family and two British families, and of course they all interact throughout the story, sometimes falling in love, sometimes fighting on opposite sides of a battlefield.

It’s been a difficult book to write because I wanted each character to be involved in great events but at the same time to have his or her own personal drama and destiny. I think I have succeeded, but I won’t know for sure until you have read it.

Publication day is 28 September, and Fall of Giants will be released simultaneously in German, Spanish, Italian and French.

It’s the first of a trilogy called ‘The Century’ which will follow successive generations of the same families from 1911 to 1989.

I’m planning a long trip to promote the book, starting in the USA and going on to the UK, Spain, Italy, France, Germany, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

This year should also see the release of the eight-hour miniseries of The Pillars of the Earth. I haven’t seen the whole thing yet, but the cast is great and the shots I have seen looked exciting. If I can get advance information about dates and times of broadcasts in different countries I’ll post the details on my web site at http://www.ken-follett.com.
